The brief weather report this morning is "8 degrees, dreary." Usually, when students are on their way to or from class, about one in three is talking on a cell phone. Based on observations through my window in Appleby Hall, that number has dropped to about one in twenty today, and the majority of students have hands in their pockets and caps covering their ears. If you're not getting updates as frequently from your student this week, you can attribute it to the cold weather. Suggestion: Send cookies or some other form of care package.

—Volunteers Needed: Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago
We're looking for parent volunteers from the Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago areas to help with receptions for newly admitted students and their parents on the following days:
Chicago area: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, March 6, at PricewaterhouseCoopers at 1 N. Wacker Drive (downtown Chicago).
Madison area: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, Middleton High School, 2100 Bristol Street, Middleton, WI.
Milwaukee area: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, March 13, Nicolet High School, 6701 N. Jean Nicolet Road, Glendale, WI.

The receptions are presented as a way to answer questions and address concerns specific to potential students from these three areas. We're hoping to find parents who can help register participants and mingle with families, talking about your student's experience at the University of Minnesota. If you are available to help, please contact Casey Byrne at byrn0057@umn.edu, or call 1-800-752-1000 or 612-626-1081. We appreciate your help!

—Career Planning
One more reminder of the "big" job fair: More than 200 employers will be recruiting at the U of M Job and Internship Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, February 25, at the Minneapolis Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis. The fair is free and open to all U of M undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni. Students can register at www.umjobfair.org, where they will also find preparation tips and information about free transportation to the fair.

Careers in Law Forum is a free event providing students with the opportunity to explore law schools and careers in law. Tables staffed by representatives of law schools and law-related organizations will be set up from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 27, in the Great Hall of Coffman Union. Information will also be available on law school tests, test prep centers, pre-law advising at the U of M, and the U of M Pre-Law Student Society. From 2 to 4:30 p.m., there will be presentations about various organizations or schools. Check this link for a list of participating organizations: www.cclc.umn.edu/Events/Careers_in_Law_Forum.html.

Students who are still questioning their major or trying to determine how a major fits with career opportunities can attend Exploring Interests and Majors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, in the Great Hall of Coffman Union. Students will be able to take a Career Interests quiz, receive individual help from advising staff, explore campus resources and ways to get involved, learn about U of M majors, and find out more about national and international study. All students are welcome; no registration is required. Information on this and other career exploration programs is available at www.cclc.umn.edu/newsandevents.

Job Search Jump Start is a career planning event for CLA juniors, seniors, and recent graduates to help address challenges in the job search. The program, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 7, in the Mississippi Room in Coffman Union, includes guest speakers, seminars, resume critiques, networking opportunities, information packets, and lunch. More information and registration is available on GoldPASS (https://goldpass.umn.edu; then students can log in and link to events and find Job Search Jump Start) or call the Career and Community Learning Center at 612-624-7577.

—Support the U Day
University of Minnesota supporters will rally at noon, February 20, at the Minnesota State Capitol, for Support the U Day. All students, alumni, parents, faculty and staff are invited to attend to show legislators that they support the U of M. Free lunch and transportation from campus will be provided for participants. More details and registration information are available at http://www1.umn.edu/groots/support.php. If you have questions, please call Wokie Freeman at 612-626-1785 or wokie@umn.edu.

—Zipcar
Students who need occasional transportation do not need to bring a car to campus. The University has partnered with Zipcar so that students can have access to a car without the responsibility and cost of ownership. Information is available at www.zipcar.com/umn/.

—Spring Break Planning
Spring break will be March 17-21. A rash of spring break offers are now coming out, inviting students to travel south. Please remind your student that "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Students who are considering a package deal should ask for specific information: the name of the airline they will be flying, the name of the hotel where they will be staying, total cost, any restrictions that apply, and if there are cancellation penalties. They should then confirm the information with the airlines and the hotel. If they are booking a charter flight, they should ask for the charter operator's name and address and check the operator's registration with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Consumer Affairs, I-25, Washington, DC 20590. More information is posted online at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/safety/safety_2836.html.

Each month we post a question for parents on the University Parent Web site. Last month's question asked "When you were the age your student is now, what was your primary role/focus?" Nearly two-thirds (64.8 percent) of those who responded said they were in college, and about 1 in 5 (19.8 percent) were working full time. The complete results are online at www.parent.umn.edu/previous.html. Please respond to the February question at www.parent.umn.edu.

Sincerely,
Marjorie Savage
