Not all students have left campus for spring break. Several members
of a South Asian student organization were practicing an ethnic
dance in the hallway at Coffman this afternoon for an April performance.
A number of students are logged into computers at Walter Library.
The coffee shops near campus have their regular crowd of caffeine
seekers. Nevertheless, the number of students out and about is
much less than normal. Yesterday I overheard one of the facilities
management staff telling a faculty member, "We miss the students
when they're not here. It's a little quieter on campus than we
like it."
—Parent Survey
Every two years, we survey parents of University of Minnesota
students to determine whether we're meeting your needs and expectations.
Since 1995, we have been using feedback from our parent surveys
to develop the programs and services we now provide. Our current
survey is posted online, and we need your responses as we review
our programming and look at next steps in serving parents and
families. Please help us by filling out the survey at www.parent.umn.edu/survey.
As an incentive to encourage participation, you can include your
contact information for a drawing for prizes including a one-night
stay at the Radisson University Hotel (East Bank), a one-night
stay at the Holiday Inn Metrodome (West Bank), dining gift certificates
for the Campus Club in Coffman Union, $25 gift certificates at
the University Bookstores, or a copy of "You're on Your Own
(But I'm Here If You Need Me)," a book for parents of college
students by Marjorie Savage.
If you prefer not to fill out the survey online, please call 612-626-9291
or e-mail parent@umn.edu, and we will send a paper copy of the
survey.
—Career Planning
As part of GradFest, the University's one-stop shop for commencement,
graduating seniors and their parents are invited to attend a program, "Graduating
to What? Next Steps for Seniors." The program will address
common questions and potential concerns that seniors face as they
complete their academic careers. Topics will include tips on job
search preparation, financial planning, benefit packages, and
student loan repayment.
The program is free and will be presented at 2 p.m. both Wednesday,
March 26, and Thursday, March 27, in the University Bookstores
in Coffman Union. No registration is needed. More information
on GradFest is available at www.bookstores.umn.edu/grad/gradfest.html.
—Financial Update
The third billing statement for spring semester will be posted
March 22. Students who have an outstanding balance should receive
an e-mail statement over the weekend with the amount still due
for spring semester. The final payment will be due April 16.
—Miscellaneous
Different times of the year bring up different issues for parents
and families. We try to provide the most relevant information
on our University Parent Web site throughout the academic cycle.
The spring update is now posted at www.parent.umn.edu/update.html.
Please take a look at our Parent Question of the Month for March
at www.parent.umn.edu.
