Campus is starting to get busy! The Bookstore has added staff and checkout lines to accommodate book rush. Students are exploring campus, maps in hand, looking for their classes. The landscape staff are tidying flower beds and mowing the grass. And as always, the sun worshipers and Frisbee tossers are out on Northrop Mall. Check the Walter Library Web cam now, and come back during the next few days to see the pace pick up even more: www.it.umn.edu/webcam.php.

—Move-In for Residence Halls
First-year students will be moving into the residence halls tomorrow and Wednesday, September 1 and 2, and we're excited to get students back on campus after a quiet summer. If you have a hand truck (aka a "dolly") for moving items, and if you can fit it into your vehicle, it will smooth the move a bit. Laundry carts are available at the halls, but sometimes there's a wait for the carts.

Parents are encouraged to move their students' belongings into the room, and then take a bit of a break. Give your student a chance to do some unpacking and meet the roommates or neighbors. Parents are invited to attend the parent/family open house receptions hosted by the Parent Program and Weisman Art Museum. We'll have people on hand to answer last-minute questions, refreshments, and a short program. You will hear briefly what your student will be doing during Welcome Week; what's planned in the residence halls; when bills for first semester can be expected; and up-to-date messages about health and safety, including H1N1 flu.

For parents of students who have been assigned to move in on Tuesday evening, September 1, the reception will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Weisman Art Museum with a program at 7 p.m. Those moving their students on Wednesday, September 2, will find us at the Weisman from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a program at 2 p.m. The Weisman Art Museum is on the East Bank, next to Coffman Memorial Union.

In addition, I've been asked to discuss my book for parents of college students, "You're on Your Own (But I'm Here If You Need Me)," at the University Bookstore in Coffman Union at 3:30 p.m. Please come!

Upperclass students will move into the halls this weekend.

—Move-In for Off-Campus Students
Parents who are moving their students into an off-campus apartment or house are asked to check for safety concerns. Are smoke detectors working? Are there fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors? Do doors and windows lock securely? Are there multiple exits in case of fire? Any problems should be directed to the landlord or caretaker. If problems are significant or leasing issues arise, your student has access to lawyers and paralegals at the University Student Legal Services office on the West Bank: www.umn.edu/usls/.

—Parents Weekend Registration
The fall issue of the Parent Newsletter, with registration information for Parents Weekend, was sent out at the beginning of August and should have arrived in your mailbox by now. Parents Weekend is October 9-11, and the registration deadline is rapidly approaching. Registration must be received by September 19. Details and online registration are available through the following Web site: www.parent.umn.edu/events/parentswknd2009.html.

—The University at the State Fair
How are decisions made about who gets priority for vaccinations during a flu pandemic? What do archaeological digs tell us about ancient cultures? How does the brain work? These and other questions will be addressed at the University of Minnesota building and stage at the State Fair. If you're going to the Fair (and in Minnesota, nearly everyone does), check out the U of M displays and presentations. And if you're going to the Fair on Labor Day, please join me at 11 a.m., when I'll be on the U of M stage, talking about sending kids to college. The full schedule is at www.statefair.umn.edu/.

—Internship Course
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are working at an internship of at least 120 hours over the course of a semester can receive credit as they examine, reflect on, and construct meaning from their experience. The class, ID 3208 Internship Reflection: Making Meaning of Your Experience, is a one-credit, online course. Students can contact 612-624-7577 or www.cclc.umn.edu for more information and to get a permission number in order to register.

—Miscellaneous
Bookstore hours are expanded during Welcome Week and the beginning of the semester. Check the hours at www.bookstores.umn.edu/customercare/coffmanhours.html.

See the fall update at www.parent.umn.edu/update.html for an abbreviated academic calendar, links to tuition payment schedule, resources for off-campus living, information on campus safety, resources for students, and more.

Each month we post a Parent Question on our Website at www.parent.umn.edu. Your responses help us understand and address parent concerns and issues. Please check it out.
