Parents of commuter students
Although all first-year students face similar adjustment-to-college issues, there are some unique challenges for students living at home or in a house or apartment off campus. In addition, the college transition affects all members of the family when the student is living at home and commuting to campus every day.
When parents understand the challenges faced by commuter
students, they can play an important role in making the
college experience better for their student. Drawing
on information provided by commuters and their family
members, a Web site for parents offers insights into
the student perspective and tips for supporting commuter
students: www.parent.umn.edu/commuter.html.
Open house for parents of commuters
A program for parents of students who are commuting to
campus is scheduled as part of Parents Weekend, from
4:30 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, October 9, in 303 Coffman
Union. This open house, hosted by the Commuter Connection
student
group, will provide tips to help commuter students become
better connected to the University.
Dinner will be provided. Registration is required; call
Laura Knudson, Commuter Connection adviser, at 612-624-5582
or e-mail commuter@umn.edu. |
