Fall
2009
It’s a whole new ball game—and a new Parents Weekend: October 9–11
Check in with your student this fall, enjoy the pageantry of a Big Ten Homecoming, and attend a series of events and workshops especially for parents and family members.
With the new TCF Bank Stadium opening on campus this year, tickets for all football games, including Parents Weekend, are extremely limited. When we found we would have very few tickets to make available to parents, we consulted with Minnesota Parents Association members for suggestions on how to allocate tickets. Overwhelmingly, parents said priority should go to families of upperclassmen first.
We opened Parents Weekend Gold Package reservations to parents of seniors and juniors in May, and nearly all tickets were sold within two weeks. In June we offered the remaining tickets to parents of sophomores, and those sold out quickly.
Football viewing party
Parents Weekend will feature all the elements of a football weekend, though. Parents can experience the new stadium by attending the Homecoming Pep Fest and fireworks on Friday evening. The game will be broadcast (with a special half-time show) in Coffman Theater. Game day refreshments will be provided, and family members can pair game watching with game room activities in the lower level of Coffman Memorial Union.
You can still cheer for Gopher athletes in person by purchasing a ticket ($4) for the women’s volleyball game with Penn State at 1 p.m., Sunday, October 11.
Arts track
Those who prefer arts to athletics can choose a Saturday afternoon presentation on the University’s arts venues, including campus outdoor art.
After the game, all Parents Weekend participants can make their own sundaes at the Ice Cream Social. Throughout the weekend, workshops and tours will provide insider information about campus and tips for helping your student succeed.
The Maroon Parents Weekend Package ($30) includes events, tours, and educational programs for parents; an Ice Cream Social with U staff and administrators; a University Bookstores coupon; and a Parents Discount Card for campus venues.
Weekend activities are still being planned, so please check the University Parent Web site (www.parent.umn.edu/events) for updated information. See page 7 for the registration form to purchase your weekend package and to register for special workshops and tours.
Registration closed September 19. |
