Strategic positioning: A plan for the University’s
future
From the Fall 2005 Parent Newsletter
For the past year, the University has been engaged in a strategic
positioning process to plan for its future, and, as a parent, you
may be wondering whether the process will affect your student’s
program and academic progress at the University.
Recommendations approved by the Board of Regents on June 10—designed to
strengthen the University’s bid to become one of the top three public research
institutions in the world—include the integration of programs now within
the College of Human Ecology into other colleges; the integration of programs
in the College of Natural Resources into the College of Agricultural, Food and
Environmental Sciences; and the integration of General College into an expanded
College of Education and Human Development. The changes will take place by July
1, 2006, but the programs in which your student is currently enrolled will continue
in the new colleges.
In his report to the regents, University president Bob Bruininks stated: “Many
of [the] recommended changes are intended to improve student progress and results
and expand learning opportunities. Students in programs affected by these structural
realignments will not be adversely affected. They will be allowed to continue
in their degree programs, classes will continue to be offered toward their degrees,
and student services will continue to be provided. Most important, there will
be exciting new opportunities for students to engage in interdisciplinary studies
in the new colleges.”
