Career
planning through the college years
From the Fall 2003 Parent Newsletter
Freshmen: The first year is usually a time of exploration.
Even students who enter college believing that they know their career
destination might find that the courses they like best have nothing
to do with that field of study. Students who have not yet decided
on a major or who come to doubt their original plans are encouraged
to visit the University Counseling & Consulting Services Career
Development Center in Eddy Hall, where they can take assessment tests
and receive guidance for determining their interests, skills, and
values.
Sophomores: During the second (and third) years,
students should be talking to their adviser and career center staff
about job interests. The sophomore year is a good time to take a
career exploration course. Students can check with their college
academic or career adviser to find a careers course.
Juniors: Internships are recognized as a stepping
stone for landing a job after graduation. Often, students begin with
a short-term unpaid internship, then move into a paid internship,
usually for a specific time period. Internships and part-time or
summer jobs in a field have become the answer to the postgraduate
question, “Do you have any experience?”
Seniors: Students who will be looking for a job
after graduation should be checking in regularly with the career
center in their college. Students will find the services most closely
linked to their career choice within their own college. Career center
staff can work with students to tailor a résumé to
a specific position, give suggestions for application letters, and
provide interview advice and practice. Those who plan to attend graduate
school should be taking graduate school exams during fall semester
and filling out applications for the programs they want to attend.

Health Careers Fair
Was September 17, 2003
Students can explore a future in health care by attending the Health Careers
Fair. They will find out about the advantages of careers in health care and get
an overview of all the degree programs available at the U.
This is a once-a-year opportunity for students who haven’t thought seriously
about a health career before, as well as those who know that they want to pursue
professional training in a health field. The fair is free. Students can register
online at www.healthcareers.umn.edu.
More career fairs, workshops, and programs
Career-related workshops, programs, and job fairs are scheduled on campus throughout
the year. Students can check with their individual college career office for
programs specific to their career plans. They can view University-wide events
at the following Web sites:
