Presenter Biographies and Contact Information

Jodi Malmgren is director of advising for the Learning Abroad Center at the University of Minnesota. Jodi oversees the advising, grades, registration, and financial aid processes for students studying abroad. Before joining the Learning Abroad Center, she advised University of Minnesota students for 5 years and taught political science for 2 years. Jodi completed her B.A. at St. Olaf College and her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota, and twice studied abroad in Paris, France.

Antonia Lortis
Studied abroad in high school in Venezuela through Youth For Understanding. 1989 Volunteered abroad in high school in Costa Rica through Amigos de las Americas. 1990 Studied abroad in college in Guatemala, Colombia and Ecuador through HECUA (Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs) 1993 Will study abroad in Vienna, Austria and Warsaw, Poland through Carlson School of Management May term 2006.

Laura Coffin Koch is a Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota. She has been a faculty member at the University since 1987. Her research and teaching interests revolve around the learning of mathematics by underrepresented populations. She is the author of numerous articles, chapters, and papers and is the recipient of several grants from the National Science Foundation on the teaching of mathematics to minority college students and middle school girls with disabilities.

Currently Dr. Koch is the associate vice provost for First Year Programs at the University of Minnesota. In that position, she has responsibility for convocation, freshman seminars, and the office of Orientation and First Year Programs. In 2000, Dr. Koch was appointed by the Secretary of Defense to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. During the 1999-2000 academic year, professor Koch was an American Council of Education Fellow.
