On- and Off-campus Housing

Introduction

At the University of Minnesota, 75 percent of freshmen choose to live in residence halls during their first year on campus. Each year, about 2,300 of our 6,000 residence hall students re-apply for on-campus housing for the next year. The rest plan to live near campus or at home.

Residence halls provide students with a degree of independence, while still offering some supervision. Students set their own hours, work out lifestyle decisions with their roommates and hall neighbors, and have access to regular, nutritious meals. At the same time, residence hall living is regulated by policies regarding certain behaviors. Residence hall policies are designed to ensure a safe, comfortable environment for all students.

Students, parents, and the University generally consider residence hall living as a transition step toward independence. The next step is moving to an apartment-a logical progression in a student's personal and social development. Most students move into an apartment with other students. From a developmental standpoint, apartment living is a good way to continue learning to share responsibilities, identify priorities, and resolve conflicts with others in a relatively safe environment. The presence of compatible roommates offers the security and support of working through situations with friends who are going through the same experiences and life stages.

This online workshop provides parents with information that may be helpful as your student selects housing for next year. We ask that you read the information provided, work through the assignments, talk with your student about the housing choice, and take note of any questions that come up as you're working through these Web pages.

Finally, please help us by filling out the evaluation form. We want to know how it has worked for you. We also will use your input in designing future presentations of parent information.
